Ron Ely as Doc Savage

I think this is it. Other than tweaking up the HTML mistakes, I'm done with this phase. I'm considering adding a few WAV files from the film, but we'll see. Got any ideas, let me know.

Years ago, this web page was up in a different format. It featured vidcaps of the film, and little else. After I decided to put my web space to other use, the folks at the Hidalgo Trading Company kindly took in my homeless video captures and added some neat behind the scenes info on the cast. After I got the the movie on widescreen laserdisc, I decided to put up a "photo-novel" of the film (which means lots of graphics on the following pages - be patient, especially if you have a slow connection) for those that haven't been able (or worked up the nerve) to see it.

You see, in the core Doc fan community, the film is looked down upon. It is to the original Doc pulps what the 60s Batman TV show is to the grim avenger of the night more familiar to today's Batman fan.

Personally, I love the film. If nothing else, it started me on reading the Bantam reprints of the pulps. It took me over twenty years to collect them all, and who knows how long it'll be before I actually get them all read, but everyone needs a hobby, right? All I knew back in those glorious days of 1975 was that the guy who played Tarzan (Ron Ely, in the TV series of the late 60s I watched every Saturday in syndication) had a movie. One scene in the previews had him sliding down an elevator cable. Looked cool to me. Made my dad drag me to see it. We stood in a good-sized line I remember. Must've been an afternoon matinee for the kiddies - it was G rated - because even though the movie tanked at the box office, we had a line to stand in.

I dug up the Golden Press hardbacks next at a school book sale. Then I found the paperback series on the shelves of the bookstores. I was in Doc heaven.

For awhile there were rumors circulating that Arnold Schwarzenegger was signed up to play Doc in a movie. Not my first choice, but I was more than willing to give it a chance. It was pretty much dead in the water even before he became governor of California, unfortunately. If nothing else, Arnold meant it would've been a big movie, and these days big movies mean merchandising. No matter how good or bad the movie might've been, there was a good chance that there would be more Doc stuff to collect, and that's a winning situation as far as I'm concerned.

Any comments or suggestions, please don't hesitate to email me or post to the alt.fan.doc-savage newsgroup.

Meanwhile, "let us do right to all, and wrong no man."

This page is not in any way meant to infringe upon the owners of the rights to "Doc Savage" and related characters. In fact, it is to help them. Yes, help them. My plan is to help keep awareness of these works of art in the public consciousness so that the copyright owners realize they can still make some cash off the thing. We've had the letterboxed laserdisc I wished for the first time this page was up, now we need the big-budget, respectful feature film.

Special Thanks to Clayton Moore for being a hero.
